Hina Hundt is an artist and illustrator based in France. The representation of womxn, especially of black womxn, is her subject of predilection, her inspiration and muse. Being a black woman herself, she considers the bodies in her illustrations as the intimate witnesses to her personal thoughts and experiences, as well as a reflection of the roles that are imposed unto them by patriarchy. The artist brings to light body issues, stigmatisations and discriminations impacting these womxn to reclaim their stories. Her illustrations translate a message of kindness through her delicate lines and warm colour palettes. Hina Hundt’s work honours womxn and people of colour, self-love, body love and intimacies.
For Sujets de Désir, her first solo exhibition in a gallery, Hina Hundt shows black womxn as subjects of desire instead of objects of desire. Through this series she wants to reclaim desire as its subject. As a black womxn, being an object of desire still often relates to the fetichisation of black bodies, associated with the colonial and racist imaginaries of European countries. Black womxn, as well as their symbols of femininity and sensuality, are confronted with hypersexualisation, rejection (before being reappropriated by white bodies), and stereotypical fantasies ubiquitous in white cultures. Hina Hundt wants to present a way out of the colonial mindset still prevailing in Europe. Sujets de Désir offers a new narrative created by a black woman, for black womxn, and those who care.
For Hina Hundt, to achieve genuine equality, we must have a truly diverse representation of everyone in mainstream media and culture. It’s in her work that she carries out this idea by illustrating black womxn in their many sensualities and intimacies. For this new exhibition, Hina Hundt depicts different black womxn reclaiming their own bodies and narratives, they are the subjects of desires and proud.
