Shishi San approaches tufting in an innovative way for her solo show where she’ll present a series of brand new creations, made especially for the occasion. The artist will display her latest collection of traditional Chinese vases, as well as some smaller artworks, all of them in her distinct aesthetic.
Shishi is a conceptual artist using tufting as one of her many means of expression. Having developed a spatial awareness that enabled her to envision the medium beyond a plane surface, Shishi creates what she calls fluffy paintings, artworks that are both paintings and sculptures. She revises traditional tufting techniques to create artworks imbued with her distinctive style she developed throughout the years. She aims to push the boundaries of tufting to the maximum by pushing her own artistic abilities and techniques.
Inspired both by Japanese and Chinese cultures, Shishi is attracted by organic shapes and often focuses on the plant world. Initially interested in tattoos, Shishi then detached herself from that universe to concentrate on more complex compositions.
For her first exhibition at that’s what x said, Shishi San presents her most ambitious body of work to date. The artist reinterprets the codes of tufting by working with unexpected colours, techniques and formats.
