For her second solo exhibition at that’s what x said, Hina Hundt is inspired by her personal experiences and tells the story of a fallen love story, from her darkest moments to finding her way back to happiness. Derrière les nuages (Behind the clouds) is an ode to self-love and being born again. The artist celebrates finding herself again and getting back in touch with parts of herself that had slipped away from her. Hina Hundt allowed herself time to tend to herself, treating herself like her own intimate garden of compassion, that we nurture for ourselves and with the people who surround us. This exhibition bears witness to her journey, where she had to face her demons and battle with depression, to finally being able to reconnect with and cherish her life.
With Derrière les nuages, Hina Hundt shares intimate parts of herself to highlight the absolute necessity to care for oneself. As a black woman living in Europe, she inherited from a long history of black people being denied their fundamental needs. This history is omnipresent in Western contemporary societies, revealing itself through systemic violences, misogynoir, fetichisation, the Mediterranean syndrome, etc. All of which play a role in the discreditation and invisibilisation of the need for physical and psychological access to care for black women. On the other hand, she also inherited from a history of resilience, resistance, solidarity and empowerment, to which she is paying homage to with this exhibition.
With this exhibition, Hina Hundt encourages others to be brave enough to love themselves by illustrating intimate spaces of compassion, rest, support, inspiration, and joy, for themselves and for their communities. The artworks exhibited in Derrière les nuages are an ode to life, filled with bright colours and curves, rhythmed by joy and high energy, but also by something much darker. For this exhibition, the artist experimented with a new range of colours while exploring her innermost experiences and emotions.
Behind the clouds, there’s a chocolate toast and the smell of spring. Because it’s with these delights that one can start seeing the light again.
