Rami Hara is a Belgian Somalian artist, living and working in Brussels, where he studied graphic design at the LUCA School of Arts. Self-taught, he discovered photography on his own and practiced by capturing his travels, family and friends. Rami uses photography to tell a story and challenge various issues surrounding him. Merging the boundaries between editorial and documentary photography, Rami’s universe is both aesthetic and meaningful. For him, the city is his playground, a place to capture moments, find new equipment in markets, and edit his photographs in the back of a café.
For his series Hooyo, Rami approaches a theme closely linked to his personal story and culture. He wants to display the hijab in a new light, inherent to his Somalian roots, to show the beautiful side of faith. His mother and three sisters wear the hijab, which he believes shouldn’t be seen as negatively as in mainstream medias. He wants to offer a new and positive representation of the hijab in an attempt to challenge stereotypes.
