As part of our current exhibition ‘Hooyo’ by Rami Hara, we invited Sumaya Chekkali for an evening of slam poetry.
Sumaya will perform different poems addressing her own experiences with cultural differences as a woman wearing the hijab. As part of the performance, she will present a poem from her latest project ‘Unwritten Words’. This project is about the impact of immigration on family members and culture. In that poem, Sumaya looks at the erasure of stories, and the need to find a place to belong to.
Sumaya Chekkali is a 22-year-old spoken word artist, not limiting herself to writing she wants to explore every aspect of being an artist. Born from an Algerian father and a Yemeni/Somali mother, her multicultural roots and living in the Western world gave her a different point of view on things. She’s not afraid to address uncomfortable subjects in her poems, seeing them as an opportunity to educate people on their differences.
