Joy Ismail is a Lebanese neuroscientist and writer. After obtaining her PhD in biomedical sciences in Beirut, she left Lebanon to pursue her career abroad. She’s currently doing a post-doctorate at the Université Catholique de Louvain.
In addition to her scientific research, Joy devotes part of her life to writing fiction novels, poetry and articles on different aspects of the “human experience”. Her writing is a way for her to destigmatize the academic world, with which she has a strong relationship.
At the end of her PhD, Joy felt the need to share her experience of the academic world. Her studies isolated her socially and had an impact on her mental and physical health. Like many Lebanese expatriates, Joy left her home and family to seek better opportunities elsewhere. Writing helped her regain mental stability.
Her poetry explores in depth her sense of alienation and questions her life choices. Her lines are imbued with raw, honest emotion, depicting her darkest moments of homesickness and profound loneliness. Many who have migrated will identify with Joy’s reality and find comfort in the universality of shared emotions.
